Significance of Employee Benefits Benefits that employees offer today in many cases are much different in form from those of even 20 years ago. Then, a large company could be expected to offer healthcare insurance, life insurance, vacation, sick days and a variety of smaller, more specialized benefits such as adoption assistance or tuition assistance. Employee assistance programs still were not widely used, because some individuals feared there would be negative implications at work. The senior vice president and managing director of human resources worldwide for Chubb & Son Inc. writes that part of his companys ability to attract and retain a high-performing workforce is because the company strives to keep Chubbs benefits valuable to employees and relevant to their lives (Graham, 1996). That company surveyed employees in the early 1990s to discover how their benefits were working for them and how Chubb could improve. The point is not to promise employees the moon, but rather to provide a bridge between work and personal lives. The costs of recruitment and hiring are high, and it is difficult to estimate the impact of turnover in many positions. It makes little difference who takes a fast-food order, but loss of continuity in other kinds of positions is costly to the organization.
