From the perspective of the employer and the manager a more highly motivated and more careful managed employee may be a greater asset than an employee with lower motivation levels. Therefore, it is in the interests of the employer to motivate the employee. Human relations models have indicated there can be mutual benefit, with motivation; higher performance levels as a result of meeting the employees needs to create motivation. However, there are limitation on the level of the management, and in some cases it may be argued from a Marxist or more cynical perspective that management of the employee, even if the employees is happier, is no more than manipulation of the employees perception by the employer in an effort to profit from them. The examination of the MARS model the way in which there is the potential, and the limitations to manage employees may be appreciated. MARS is short for motivation, ability, role perceptions and situational factors. These are four factors that can directly impact on the voluntary behaviour of the employee, impacting on the level of effort and the results achieved (McShane and Von Glinow, 2005). Motivation has long been accepted as an important influence on the way an employee will behave. This was considered by theorists such as Adams who assumed that the employees motivation was purely economic, or those of Mayo (Carey, 1967), Maslow and Hertzberg who looked to explain motivation in terms of social forces (Huczyniski and Buchanan, 2003, Baron, 1987).
