computers are taking the place of textbooks. This paper examines some of the issues and questions surrounding Empires decision to become entirely wired. Discussion Empire High School,
which opened in July 2005, is a small facility, serving no more than 700-750 students when at maximum capacity (Lee). Its also one of the few schools in the
country to abandon textbooks completely, instead issuing laptop computers to its students for their use. With the aid of their teachers, students learn how to use the computers for
Internet research (not just surfing or downloading music); and how to work in Word (the Windows word processing program) to write and store their papers. Teachers also make materials
available via their laptops. Cindy Lee, the principal of Empire High, says that the school was designed to be "text-book free" (my term). There are several reasons
for this. First, technology has advanced very rapidly in almost all areas of our lives, except for the classroom. This has proven frustrating for students, many of whom are
far more comfortable with technology than their parents or instructors. One student, who has a desktop and laptop computer, and who works "in the computer section at Best Buy,"
says that when he goes to school "its like hitting a time warp" (Scarpinato, 2005). The only computer in the classroom is the teachers desktop system, and for this
student, who is a computer expert, the situation is annoying. Students who dont know how to use computers are going to have a very tough time finding work once
