book is one that touches on many different changes, discussing the political attitudes of the time and also discussing how the great minds of the time were also involved as
the country changed during the Tokugawa period in Japan. In the following paper we discuss Earls book while also discussing what others have to say about the time period. In
doing so we indicate that Earls work is one of many that attempts to understand the changes and the developments of the time period. Emperor and Nation in
Japan When we present the most simplistic summary of Earls book we note that this particular work is a study. It is a study of the writings of the minds
of the time and a study of the political attitudes possessed by the people during the Tokugawa-period. Through this study Earl attempts to explain how the region developed into a
country that housed an exemplary samurai during the 19th century, a group of individuals who seemed to indicate that the ideals of previous generations were still held as honorable and
powerful. He presents this attempt through offering many different examinations, talking about the shogun political structure, and the people who made up the mind of the samurai. Earl
focuses predominantly on the attitudes of the people towards the emperor and the nation. This is a condition, or reality, that also greatly involved the Bakufu, or the Tokugawa shogunate
government. From this simple description we can see that Earl has attempted to truly bring to the reader a broad range of material in order that they begin to develop
