It was apparent that if something was not done about decreasing the numbers, China would never be able to move forward as a nation. The idea, in and of itself, was not bad; however, the policies that have been born out of the desire to immediately control the population have caused a great deal of unnecessary death and suffering. Women have paid a huge price for Chinas fertility control in that many of them, being fearful of governmental retaliation if they do not abide by limiting laws, will abort their own babies, endangering their own lives. The cross-cultural aspect of this otherwise troubling situation is how more Chinese babies are being trafficked to other countries after having been abandoned by their terrified mothers or stolen by unscrupulous officials to "to reap a portion of the $3,000 that orphanages receive for each adopted child" (Groves, 2009). The explosive opposition to Chinas one-child policy act has been supported by incidents of inhumane proportions. Given the fact that large families are representative of Chinas inherent history, imposing restrictions that allow only one child per family --otherwise leaving the parents to face fines, taxes and the absence of governmental support -- has been looked upon as barbarous for such a developed nation. Issues of hostility toward women and the overwhelming statistical evidence of abortion-related medical concerns have turned what once might have been a reasonably good idea to controlling Chinas tremendous overpopulation problem into one that carries with it significant drawbacks with regard to human life.
