concept that is is not easy to precisely define. While there are numerous examples of definitions of the term, these descriptions are usually tied in with popular press as opposed
to scientific inquiry ("What is Emotional Intelligence?," n.d. ). Mayer, Salovey & Caruso (2004) explain that while there is a great deal of inquiry into the precise definition of emotional
intelligence or EI, they define it as follows: "the capacity to reason about emotions, and of emotions to enhance thinking. It includes the abilities to accurately perceive emotions, access and
generate emotions to assist thought, to understand emotions and emotional knowledge, and to reflectively regulate emotions so as to promote emotional and intellectual growth (e.g. Mayer & Salovey, 1997)" (197).
In effect, someone who has control over emotions and deals with them well is thought to be emotionally intelligent. And while there is much scientific inquiry in the field, it
was the release of a book by Daniel Goleman that popularized the concept. Daniel Goleman (1997), author of Emotional Intelligence, points out just
how important emotions are in the scheme of things. Goleman (1997) explains the reasons for emotions and why they are relevant: "Sociobiologists point to the preeminence of heart over head
at such crucial moments when the conjecture about why evolution has given emotion such a central role in the human psyche" (4). An example of this is when a mother
lifts a car weighing thousands of pounds from her child who is clearly being hurt. This is not a logical action nor does it seem possible to the rational mind.
