want to succeed. A definition of "success" is to feel that you have accomplished educational goals within the framework of a satisfying lifestyle that includes worthwhile relationships. In considering
how to succeed during the freshman year and accomplish this goal, empirical research offers some helpful insight. Recent studies suggest that intelligence is broader than the rather narrow domains
that are measured by traditional intelligence tests and that a factor that is referred to as "emotional intelligence" plays a key role in academic success (Reiff, et al 66).
It has been shown that traditional conceptualizations of intelligence have little, if anything, to do with either emotional intelligence (EI) or with success in life (Reiff, et al 66).
According to Daniel Coleman, a Harvard psychiatrist, there are five basic elements to EI, which are "self-awareness, managing emotions, motivating oneself, empathy and handling relationships" (Rovenger 40). EI has been
defined as "the ability to monitor ones own and others feeling and emotions, discriminate among them, and use this information to guide ones own thinking and actions" (Reiff, et al
66). These factors are interrelated. For example, motivation includes developing emotional self-control and the ability "to delay gratification" (Rovenger 40). Certainly for academic success, a student requires skill at
managing emotions, which includes being able to prioritize activities. Take, for example, a situation where friends ask you to go shoot a game of pool or attend a party. While
social functions are essential for a well-rounded life, it is also true that research that many students who fail to succeed academically at the university level report feeling overwhelmed. If
