1990 in which they introduced the concept of emotional intelligence (Goleman, 2011). Goleman was a science editor at the New York Times, read the article, and in 1995 published a
book on emotional intelligence. Goleman freely acknowledges this history of the concept. Emotional leadership has to do with emotions. It is not the same as spiritual leadership. Most
of the early literature on emotional intelligence emphasized the work environment and more specifically leadership. Goleman identified five components involved with emotional intelligence: self-awareness or knowing what you are feeling;
motivation; self-regulation; empathy; and social skills (Webb 2009). The first three, self-awareness, motivation, and self-regulation are internal and related to the person himself. The last two, motivation and self-regulation are
external and focus on how one manages relationships with others (Web, 2009). As interest in the emotional intelligence paradigm has grown, it has led to a greater understanding of
the role of cognition and the role of emotion in life outcomes for anyone. Various empirical studies have affirmed the need for emotional intelligence in life success. A great
deal of focus has been placed on emotional intelligence at work in the literature. Web (2009) explains that emotional intelligence involves knowing how to express emotions as well as when
to express emotions and when to control emotions. Research has shown that groups respond to the types of emotions that are expressed by one person in the group. Competency research
has found that only one-third of the difference in performance between two companies is due to cognitive intelligence and technical skills; the other two-thirds is directly related to emotional intelligence
