experiences they cant be expected to truly understand each other" (Hecht et al, 2002, p. 115), it is easier to accept how even the most seemingly insignificant aspect can create
a tremendous communication barrier. The Chinese, for example, have been found to be considerably less emotionally demonstrative than their Western equivalent, a factor pointedly attributed to the mothers influence
(Munsey, 2006). Without ability to discern a particular emotion - such as whether or not ones Asian mother-in-law is enjoying the movie since her face has not registered any
emotion throughout the entire film - the potential for misinterpretation is high. While Westerners largely subscribe to the psychological and physiological benefits of emotional display and release...emotional expressions such
as love, anger, and joy are typically kept covert in Chinese culture (Walker et al, 2005). Experiencing life requires much more than
merely going through the paces of ones existence; rather, the various components of emotional expressivity inherent to a given culture reflect how the same emotion is either expressed or not,
internalized or demonstrated, outwardly acknowledged or inwardly suppressed. For example, because one culture responds a certain way to the expression of happiness that is not clearly recognized by another
