period in which my mother-in-law passed away; we were ultimately left with the daunting task of sifting through years of memories in preparation to sell her house. From the
very night she died to the day escrow closed on her house, every step of the way was filled with bits and pieces of a seventy-five-year-old woman life from birth
to death. Such an intrusive job to either pack up, give away or toss out every element of her existence was almost too much to bear; the emotions experienced
on this final day, when the door on the home is closed on last time and the key is handed over to another couple whose family is only just beginning,
brought about the physiological reaction of tears - both from relief and sorrow. These feelings welled up as the finality of the situation hit hard; of course we knew the
day would arrive sooner than later, but I didnt anticipate such a wave of sadness to overcome me like it did. The events of the past four months -
from the night she died only hours after we left the hospital to removing the very last box of personal effects from the house - encapsulated a period of intense
focus that, until it is finally looked back upon in retrospect, one cannot truly believe one has endured such emotional pain and still took care of business, so to speak.
Mixed in with the feelings of sorrow, however, were also those of joy and happiness for the long life she lived, as well as contentment that she was no
