Sawyer, something of a hooligan who was always in some sort of trouble and generally because of his friend Huckleberry Finn. Most of his troubles ended up being quite serious,
but he always seemed to manage to come out on top at the end of each adventure. The following paper examines the emotional changes Tom goes through in Mark Twains
novel. Emotional Changes in The Adventures of Tom Sawyer In the very beginning of the story Tom is living with elderly women, his aunts, who are trying to
make him into a proper boy. But Tom, who really is a civilized boy at heart, is also only out for a good time as most children are: "Tom did
play hookey, and he had a very good time" (Twain Chapter I). He was a boy who "wandered far from the accustomed haunts of boys, and sought desolate places that
were in harmony with his spirit" (Twain Chapter III). At the same time this attempt to civilize him also made him very miserable: "MONDAY morning found Tom Sawyer miserable.
Monday morning always found him so--because it began another weeks slow suffering in school" (Twain Chapter VI). In these respects one sees how Tom as a relatively simple boy who
loves to play and loves to play hooky, desiring to have a good time. However, the adventure comes when Injun Joe becomes part of the plot and Tom must
essentially run and hide with Huck. This causes Tom to be frightened, but also still adventurous. He is also very emotionally tied to Huck, relying on Huck to be something
of the brains and the strength for Tom is far more of a civilized boy than is Huck and Huck is used to dangerous adventures in a way that Tom
