acting out of sheer feeling? The difference is usually obvious, but not always. For example, when a person shoots all of their family members and then kills themselves, that is
more likely an act based upon emotion. They did not think things through, but in other cases such as when a person says they want a divorce, and it seems
rather sudden, one has to wonder if they are acting based upon emotion or contemplation. Shakespeare addressed these issues. In looking at Othello and Macbeth, one sees many opportunities to
point out when characters are acting with emotion and when they are acting with reason. While of course, some characters act reasonably and there are certainly examples, many of the
players in these works act with emotion. In fact, much of Shakespeares works are based on emotional chaos. Romeo and Juliet end up dead due to their love for one
another. Ophelia is in love with Hamlet, something which seemingly drives her insane. In Othello and Macbeth, characters are similarly driven by feelings. In Othello, the character Iago for example
appears to be overbearing and tries to hurt Othello. He is manipulative, and some might construe that as using reason, not emotion, to act. But what is Iagos
motivation? It could in fact be that he is envious of Othello. At the same time, in reviewing the events of the play, one can discern what his true
motivation is. He is vengeful and wants a particular job he did not get. Clearly, his motive in the work, his revenge on Othello and so forth, are emotion-laden. Jealousy
enters the picture as well. Iago convinces Othello of Desdemonas infidelity, something that Othello further convinces himself is real. Yet, Othello is not rational. He runs on pure emotion because
