those who wished to get to the truth and those who wished to simply dismiss the incident because it involved an African American. It was, however, also an incident that
served to instigate new struggles in the civil rights movement. The following paper examines the situations, the trial and ensuing activities, regarding Emmett Till. Emmett Till "In August
1955, a fourteen-year-old black boy whistled at a white woman in a grocery store in Money, Mississippi. Emmett Till, a teen from Chicago, didnt understand that he had broken the
unwritten laws of the Jim Crow South until three days later, when two white men dragged him from his bed in the dead of night, beat him brutally and then
shot him in the head."1 There was, however, far more to the story than this. It seems that Emmett was in the
area visiting his relatives, staying with a preacher who was one of his relatives.2 He was out with friends and relatives one evening and he was apparently bragging about the
fact he had a white girlfriend back in Chicago.3 He was then pressured to go into a store where this woman, Caroline, was working and prove he could get a
white woman.4 Emmett went in and tried to prove himself, acting with a bit of bravado and pressure and telling the woman he had been with white women, essentially trying
to prove himself while slightly pressuring her, making her uncomfortable.5 His cousin came in a got him telling him it was time to leave. Caroline and her sister-in-law decided not
to tell anyone about what happened but after a few days word got around and their husbands were determined to put the fear of God, so to speak, into Emmett.6
