England home. Dickinson was alone with only her thoughts for company, and a subject that dominated most of her waking moments was death - the eternal slumber. Why
would a Puritanical spinster have what seems to be an endless fascination with death and the hereafter. It is recommended that the student who is writing about this topic
consider how Dickinsons life influenced her interest in the morbid. Many of her biographers contend that her preoccupation with death is rooted in the religious ambivalence she wrestled with
most of her life. Author Thomas W. Ford offers this possible explanation: "She was the only member of her immediate family who was never to join a church... having
felt no inner conversion, she could not honestly acknowledge allegiance to a church. This refusal was very likely a source of self-doubt and torment, but a burden perhaps made easier
to bear through her poetry" (18-19). According to Ford, because Dickinson was frequently at odds with the conventional religious beliefs that were deeply rooted in New England Calvinism, and
that it was her desire for resolution of this inner spiritual conflict that fueled her obsession with death (20). Comparing her to a twentieth-century Existentialist philosopher, Ford opines,
"Emily Dickinson felt great anxiety about death... She apparently did not try to escape the problem by ignoring it, or by accepting some secondhand or easy solution... She tried to
become as familiar as possible with death in all its aspects, in the hope that when she did come face to face with it, the experience would not be wholly
