EMILY DICKINSON: HER WORKS Emily Dickinsons poem Because I could not stop for Death, at first appears to be based on sadness and morbidity, but it is in fact a beautiful and eloquent selection of poetry, and once again is an example of the genius behind the work. Because she starts out with the mention of Death, it is assumed it is a work of sadness. Instead, it is a quiet celebration of Dickinsons joy of immortality and her faith. We perhaps first realize the symbolism evident in the poetry when she describes "Since then-tis centuries--and yet Feels shorter than the Day I first surmised the Horses Heads Were toward Eternity-" The horses heads were toward eternity gives us a clue that this is representative of life, or more specifically life after life and our journey towards that end. Emily Dickinson had a strong undercurrent of faith that she practiced in her everyday life. We find this theme running throughout her work that must not, or indeed, cannot, be overlooked. A rare taste of boundless joy is exemplified in Wild nights, wild nights. Perhaps written on a night when she was in love, this is a welcome release from some of her more somber works.
