analysis and criticism, the meanings inherent in much of Dickinsons verse remains enigmatic. As Coghill and Tammaro point out, not only does each Dickinson poem give the reader a different
"Emily Dickinson," but so does each reading of the same poem (B16). Her work has been called "metaphysical, philosophical, (and) theological," with vocabularies formulates to describe her style of thinking,
with its "cryptic ellipses, its compression, its enigmatic subjects, its absent centers and its abstractions" (Vendler 34). An examination of her poetry demonstrates how Dickinsons utilization of poetic structure and
devices mimic the structure of life as she, at any particular moment, conceived it (Vendler 34). Through these structures, Dickinson channels her readers reactions, which serves to mold the
readers reactions to reflect her own. As Dickinsons poems number close to 1800, any statements made about her work are necessarily generalizations, applying more toward some poems than others. Nevertheless,
it is possible to get an overall perspective on the way she went about her art. Dickinson, according to Vendler, Dickinsons "natural" style of thinking tended toward seeing a
plot of events in chronological succession, which is not to say that her poems told a cohesive story from beginning to end, but rather that they "unscrolled," like her
sun, "a ribbon at a time" (35). By displaying one "ribbon" after another, Dickinson presented not just a story, but a complete coverage of a temporal experience (Vendler 35). In
her early work, there is a tendency to picture all roads has not only having an end, but that "all roads have a clearing at the end," which she says
