Clearly, the love affair between her and Heathcliff exemplifies the dichotomy she faces in choosing between oppressive social confinement and what grows in her heart. Catherine and Heathcliff came to know and love each other early in their young lives. Through the years they fashioned a strong and unbreakable bond of affection that carried them through years of heartache and turmoil. With Catherine the daughter of a proud land owner and Heathcliff a rugged but humble lad brought in by the father to work in the stables, their love affair was one to be forbidden by the likes of their different cultural upbringings. As the children blossom into adolescence, their affections grow uncontrollably as both Heathcliff and Catherine attempt to understand the power of such fast and deep emotion. Said Paula Uruburu, associate professor of American literature at Hofstra University: "The main theme that connects the writing of 19th-Century women is finding a voice. Women were trying to discover their independence, their social, intellectual and sexual emancipation" (Kabak B13). The development of the theme begins slowly as Catherine and Heathcliff begin their innocent relationship early in both of their lives, inevitably gaining significant speed, tension and passion with every passing chapter.
