recommend possible solutions to remedy these ills. Durkheim was the first lecturer on the topic of social science at Bordeux University from 1887-1902; professor of education at the Sorbonne
beginning in 1902; and the first professor of sociology at this institution beginning in 1913 (Anonymous, 2001). The following examination of Durkheims work will focus on his contributions to sociology
in regards to nationalism, religion and anomie. In regards to nationalism, Durkheim believed in the dictum voiced by Rousseau that education should be utilized to transform individuals into "citizens,
ready for moral participation in society" (Cladis, 1995, p. 37). Durkheim write that "Education...far from having as its unique or principal object the individual and his interests, is
above all the means by which society perpetually recreates the conditions for its very existence" (Cladis, 1995, p. 37). In his book The Division of Labor in Society (1893),
Durkheim examined the elements within a society that hold it together -- what it is that causes a group of people to become a cohesive whole. Durkheim presents a theory
that views societies as moving, bit by bit, from "mechanically" governed societies, which are ruled by custom and religion, toward more complex societies, which are held together by a interdependency
of its various parts. Durkheims analysis of society posited that it centers on the relationship between social solidarity and how societies define crime. To examine this relationship, Durkheim indicated
