Ralph Waldo Emerson called for intellectual, cultural, and spiritual independence, and he spoke of the importance of nature (Emerson PG). Walt Whitman answered this call in his own magnificent
way. In order to show how Whitman responded to Emersons call, one must look to "Song of Myself" in "Leaves of Grass." Transcendentalism is a certain kind of
idealism that many aspired to, not the least of whom were Ralph Waldo Emerson and Walt Whitman. Walt Whitmans poem,
"Song of Myself," from the "Leaves of Grass" collection shows many influences, but it ultimately represents transcendentalism, which is found in his life, his believes, and his writing. "Song
of Myself," which was first published in 1855 is quite lengthy, and it offers a great deal of information about Whitman and his character (Whitman PG). Whitmans poem is
both an allegory and a journey. Whitman is taking the reader on a journey through his thoughts and beliefs. Walt Whitman is
considered by many one of the greatest, if not the greatest American poets. He wrote "Leaves of Grass" in the nineteenth century. In this work, he commemorated the
individuals freedom and dignity. He espoused the self as the most important entity. In transcendentalism, the person aspires to rise above
others. He/she aspires to become part of the spiritual realm. Self is important because it is self that can achieve this lofty goal. Nature is important.
