Emerson they seem a very natural, as well as necessary, part of society. The following paper examines this as seen in Ralph Waldo Emersons essay The Transcendentalist. Emerson
and the Romantic Hero Emerson states that these people, these transcendentalists, are "are lonely; the spirit of their writing and conversation is lonely;
they repel influences; they shun general society; they incline to shut themselves in their chamber in the house, to live in the country rather than in the town, and to
find their tasks and amusements in solitude" (Emerson). As such society is disgruntled with them because they are not following the rules of society and becoming active in the society.
And, in many cases society may "retaliate" against them because of their nature (Emerson). Yet, at the same time, there is a
clear sense in Emersons essay that society does need such people because they are far more free and perhaps more able to appreciate other people and to appreciate love. They
"behold the beauty of another character....with...vivacity....behold in another the expression of a love so high that it assures itself" (Emerson). People immersed in the rules and regulations of a society
are not of this particular nature and it is an incredibly important piece of the human nature that should never be forgotten. In essence, if there were not people such
as this society would continue to control all people and the nature of human beings would become sedate and predictable and without growth or ideals. Heroes are people who
