the writer of Walden, a timeless novel about his experience living at Walden Pond. This paper discusses the two men and their relationship, as well as Thoreaus works Slavery in
Massachusetts and Resistance to civil government, more usually referred to as On civil disobedience. It relates their thinking to the Iraq War. Discussion Emerson was 14 years Thoreaus senior and
became a mentor to the younger man, whom he first met in 1837 (Chou, 2000). Thoreau had read Emersons writings and admired him greatly (Chou, 2000). Apparently Emerson urged Thoreau
to keep a journal as Emerson did, and each of the men appears in the others journal, which gives us great insight into the regard they had for one another
(Chou, 2000). In 1838, for instance, Emerson "comments on Thoreaus simplicity & clear perception" (Chou, 2000). An observer of the time found differences between the two: for one thing,
Emerson "continually deferred to Thoreau," and prepared himself "for a quiet laugh at Thoreaus negative and biting criticism, especially in regard to education and educational institutions" (Chou, 2000). This was
apparently one of the major differences between the two: Emerson championed the idea of higher education, Thoreau never saw "any good to the college course" (Chou, 2000). In addition, "Thoreaus
personality was bolder and more action-oriented than Emersons. He was far more progressive and activist than Emerson on the anti-slavery issue" (Brown). Emerson himself said that physically, Thoreau was the
stronger of the two: "He has muscle, & ventures on & performs feats which I am forced to decline" (Chou, 2000). This vigor also extends to intellectual matters; again, Emerson
