scope of his social and economic thinking, is the concept of transcendentalism. He saw all forms of life, both in the natural world and in terms of humanity, as inextricably
interlinked and imbued with the same Spirit, and because of this the objective of humanity should be to achieve a sense of balance and equality with nature. As Woodlief (2002)
points out, he asserts that the interaction between human beings and the natural world tends towards imbalance because the natural order of things is not appreciated by men. Human beings
will, he comments, focus on aims such as growing the largest possible fruit, whereas nature herself looks towards the health of the whole tree, of which the fruit is just
a single part. Woodlief notes that there are various parallels which can
be drawn between Emersons philosophy and modern concepts of ecological systems and the interrelatedness of life. Sustainability, for instance, looks to integrate human economic and cultural requirements with the preservation
of the environment, and this is something which Emerson addresses in his efforts to demonstrate the ways in which human beings can exist in harmony with both themselves and with
the natural world. Nature, he asserts, is secretive, but at the same time it is human beings who will eventually be able to unlock those secrets. From this, we can
deduce that he is not against scientific investigation, only scientific intervention which can be perceived as upsetting the balance between human beings and the natural world (as in the kind
of intensive farming which focuses solely on the size of the crop rather than on the health of the whole plant and on sustainability).
