limited to the ability to undertake trade in a virtual or online world, logistics and physical distribution chains are changing significantly, moving towards more efficient and responsive models. It
is unsurprising changes have occurred, the level of trade taking place has increased exponentially, in 1963 world exports amounted to $157 billion, by 2004 this increased to $8.907 trillion (CSCMP,
2006). With this level of increase there have to be changes in the way they are managed with more global supply chain emerging and technology facilitating communication and faster transportation
to support global logistics and the resulting physical distribution chain. When looking at the trends there are several aspects which need to be considered. In all cases the impact
of information technology is very clear. This is being used to identify potential opportunities and manage new logistical models. Increased information flow is also empowering to purchasers as well as
the sellers, changing the way in which distribution takes place. In the past the issue was centralisation, with new distribution models and increasing demands the trend is towards customisation and
collaboration. More than ever before a larger number of goods are sent directly to the customers by the manufacturers, reducing the middle layers of the supply chain. The increasing pressures
of cost and demands are also forcing many companies to consider the way in which they manage their distribution. One approach adopted by many companies has been that of collaboration
