This can lead to less-than-optimum care. This paper considers the way in which standards of culturally competent care are emerging; it focuses on Tripler Army Medical Center in Hawaii. Discussion While Wikipedia is not generally recommended as a source for papers, the Tripler Army Medical Center website is not functioning; therefore, Wikipedia (which has accessed Tripler to get its information) can provide some basics. Tripler Army Medical Center is "the headquarters of the Pacific Regional Medical Command of the armed forces"; it is located in Hawaii and is administered by the U.S. Army (Tripler Army Medical Center, 2008). Tripler is the "largest military hospital in the Asian and Pacific Rim region and serves a military sphere of jurisdiction that spans over 52% of the earths surface" (Tripler Army Medical Center, 2008). This clumsy phrase appears to mean that it draws patients from over half the globe, all around the Pacific. Tripler was founded in 1907 and named after a Civil War Medic, Brigadier General Charles Stuart Tripler, who "made significant contributions to the development of military medicine" (Tripler Army Medical Center, 2008). It had 450 beds at the start of WWII, then expanded to 1,000 beds when new construction was completed in 1948 (Tripler Army Medical Center, 2008). Today, Triplers capacity is much smaller; one source says it has 171 beds (American Hospital Association, 2007); another credits it with 256 beds (Hospitals Worldwide, 2008).
