factors may be seen in action. Located in South East Asia this may be seen as an emerging economy. Even as late as the 1990 after a decade of
industrialization less than 9% of the GDP comes from the manufacturing sector (Anonymous, 2000).. The development of the country ma have been hampered by the political turmoil in the area,
but this lessened in the 1980s when the economy began to recover. However today agriculture still accounts for nearly 60% pf the GDP (Anonymous, 2000).
Other items requires such as the raw materials for manufacturing were also cheaper to extract in emerging countries. Mining and minerals extraction are cheap due to the
lack of environmental laws and lower safety standards. In Myanmar there are reserves of pressure stones such as emeralds and sapphires. This meant that investment was forthcoming, and the
country has welcomed it due to their need for a better infrastructure in order for them to overcome poverty. The investment provided incomes for the workers who needed the income
in countries where the economies where not growing at the same rate as the population. This meant that in reality they were suffering from a decline in income, and as
such the health and social problems which accompanied this decline. The way the deforestation and use of minerals has been reflected in
