The hands-on approach to design has continued to be a main aspect of Embraers business model to this day, with the company continually reinforcing its commitment to "design, development, manufacturing, sales, and after-sale support for aircraft in the segments of commercial aviation, executive aviation, defense systems, and agricultural aviation" (Embraer, 2011). Because of this robust set of in-house competencies, the company continues to be one of the most innovative and exciting businesses in the industry today. This standing is reflected quite well in the companys market performance and competition. As of 2011, the company employs some 17,204 employees in its various sectors; these individuals are comprised of designers, engineers, scientists, and so on, as the majority of the companys design and development needs are met in-house (Embraer, 2011). This approach to high-quality efforts and products earned the company a standing order backlog of more than 16 billion US dollars, as of 2011 (Embraer, 2011). In terms of net sales for the quarter, the company posted 3.7 million, with a net income of some 203 million US dollars (Embraer, 2011). With operations in the United States, Brazil, France, Portugal, Singapore, and China, the company enjoys a sizable share of the aircraft design and manufacturing market, but still faces competition from major United States corporations such as Boeing. Part of the reason for the companys success is that it is never content to be out of the public eye.
