of books published since it appeared in 1949. It won the International Fantasy Award in 1951, and still remains largely unknown. This paper discusses the book and the idea that
it is Em, not Ish, who is the "hero" of the novel. The plot of the novel is very simple: Isherwood Williams stumbles down out of the mountains to find
that most of civilization has been wiped out by a mysterious plague. The first line of the novel tells the reader immediately that something horrific has happened: "... and the
government of the United States of America is herewith suspended, except in the District of Columbia, as of the emergency" (Stewart, 1986, p. 3). Ish begins an odyssey throughout the
United States searching for survivors; he finds scattered individuals and small groups, but doesnt stay with any of them. He returns to the San Francisco area where he meets Em;
eventually, the two of them with five others form "The Tribe." Over the course of Ishs lifetime, it becomes apparent that civilization is over and that only primitive skills are
needed in this new world. The plot is simple but the issues addressed are very complex, particularly the loss of civilization. Ish represents advanced learning: he is a geologist, a
university-trained expert in his field. And yet he finds that intellectual learning is not very important in this world, whats needed are basic survival skills. As a scholar, Ish is
heartbroken when faced with the loss of everything he thought was valuable: education, research, science, even reading. Nothing is needed except basic survival skills and so the children abandon learning
and even the idea of learning; civilization is over. And because there are so few people, its doubtful if the human race will survive. The few intellectuals who are left
