man, the main character, never seems to be seen by others from a symbolic position. It is a story of being socially invisible, culturally invisible, to other people primarily because of his color. The following paper examines this obvious theme of blindness through various quotations from the novel as they offer varying levels of blindness and varying ways to experience or possess blindness. Ellisons Invisible Man and Blindness While the primary foundation of the blindness in this novel revolves around cultural and social realities because the narrator is a black man, there are many varying levels of blindness, and attention to blindness that has nothing to do with culture or race. However, it all essentially has to do with identity and society in many respects. It is a concept that involves both self perception and the perception of others in many varied ways while also illustrating various ways in which blindness illustrates limitations. The first quote comes from the beginning of the novel and the narrator states, "I am one of the most irresponsible beings that ever lived. Irresponsibility is part of my invisibility; any way you face it, it is a denial" (Ellison 11). He indicates that the reader/society refuses to see him. In essence, this lays the foundation for invisibility and blindness in the novel and clearly illustrates how the narrator understands that he too is blind in at least one respect. He suggests his blindness is irresponsibility and this obviously puts a sort of limitation on what he can do in his own mind. It also puts society, and the reader it would seem, into a position where they are seen as blind because they do not see him.
