However, the virtues displayed and valued within each story are entirely different. The plot of "Cinderella" is very familiar. A beautiful, sweet, and compliant girl is forced by her wicked stepmother to do menial chores and be a servant to her and her haughty, cruel daughters. A fairy godmother intervenes and provides Cinderella with beautiful gown, a carriage and servants, which enable her to the princes ball, where the prince falls in love with her. In leaving the ball quickly, before the magic is reversed at midnight, Cinderella leaves behind one glass slipper, which enables the prince to find her. They marry, she forgives those who tormented her and everyone lives happily ever after ("Cinderella"). The point of this fairy tale is that goodness, patience and virtue are rewarded. Cinderella remains submissive, meek, mild and somewhat boring by todays standards throughout the story. While Ellas story is somewhat similar, the characterization is totally different. Levine turns the tables on the idea of passivity being a virtue and also carries this characteristic to its farthest extreme. Ellas story opens just after her birth. Like all babies, she is crying. Lucinda, a rather stupid fairy, is intent on giving Ella a "gift" and decides that the ideal gift to the newborn child is the gift of obedience. From that point onward, Ella has to obey every since imperative command that is given to her, even when those commands are ridiculous ("Ella Enchanted").
