According to many historians, she is considered the most important monarch (king or queen) in the history of England. She ruled for a total of 45 years and it was
a time of such great importance in English history both from an economic, military and literary standpoint that is was known as "The Golden Age of England". From a military
point of view, at the time that she gained power, England was at war with both France and Scotland. Due to her political astuteness and diplomatic efforts, she was
able to sign peace treaties with both of those nations. Because of these treaties, she was able to concentrate on building up the English navy to prepare for war
with Spain. Although Spain was certainly not a powerful military nation in this day and age, it was however probably the most powerful nation in Europe during the time
of Queen Elizabeths reign. The King of Spain, Philip the second, attempted to invade England to increase his great influence in the region, but due mainly to the efforts
of Queen Elizabeth, his fleet (the Spanish Armada) was soundly defeated in 1588. Due to Englands great victory, England became the worlds leading naval power up until the 20th
century. The great naval power aided England in establishing a worldwide empire, which contained nations well away from the British Isles such as Australia, New Zealand, India, and Canada.
