The following paper examines the male/female relationships in George Eliots "Middlemarch" and Honore de Balzacs "Eugenie Grandet." The relationships, or novels, are examined separately and then compared. Middlemarch The character to be discussed in this examination is Dorothea and her relationship with her uncle and her two husbands. Dorothea and her sister were taken in by their uncle when they were still relatively young because of the death of their parents. They were both given a somewhat wealthy purse, to be distributed at 700 a year to the girls. Their uncle, however, seemed to be incredibly wealthy but also incredibly pious and stingy with money. Dorotheas uncles attitudes made Dorothea "long all the more for the time when she would be of age and have some command of money for generous schemes" )Eliot Book I). However, as a woman, and a niece of her uncle, it was also known that were she to marry and have a son that son would inherit the uncles estate. In this we see that Dorothea was somewhat helpless in where she could take her visions and her dreams of using money for good. This also illustrates how her position was far less than that of men, even her own son were she to have one. But, she was also considered an heiress because of these facts and as such was clearly an eligible wife, although she was not necessarily taught how to be a wife because she had no female figure to teach her such things. However, she did not dislike nor harbor ill feelings for her uncle, as she merely assumed her role. She did desire better ...
