In Middlemarch, the description of women makes it clear that society expects them to play certain "approved" roles based entirely on their gender. We still see this today; although to a lesser degree, and women are not restricted to the home, though they are still expected to marry. In the town of Middlemarch, gender roles determine the fate of everyone. The protagonist of Eliots novel is Dorothea Brooke, who is a strong idealist; it is her greatest desire to help others, which is not the role society has decreed for her. Eliot shows us the strength of Dorotheas character and why she may never marry within the first few paragraphs of the book: " Nothing could hinder it but her love of extremes, and her insistence on regulating life according to notions which might cause a wary man to hesitate before he made her an offer, or even might lead her at last to refuse all offers" (Eliot). If she were to marry, there is a distinct possibility that she might come up with suggestions for new ways to do things that would interfere with routine; no man would want such a wife (Eliot). Eliot tells us that "Women were expected to have weak opinions; but the great safeguard of society and of domestic life was, that opinions were not acted on" (Eliot). Womens opinions, then, were twice; they were weak, and nobody cared about them anyway. But Dorothea, after making a disastrously bad marriage, finally finds happiness in her second marriage with a man she truly loves-even though he is penniless.
