paper examines this event and discusses whether or not he was a hero or a coward, and how such a brilliant artist could have reduced himself to such low moral
depths. Hero or Coward In determining whether or not Elia Kazan was a hero or a coward one must first understand the definitions of each. A hero is
essentially a person who puts their life on the line for the benefit or safety of others. They risk something very important when they do this and normally it is
their life they are risking. A coward is someone who runs from such a risk. They do not wish to feel threatened, and they fear any such threat so they
do whatever is necessary to get out of the situation wherein they feel they are at risk. Elia Kazan did something that not many people in Hollywood did, he
named names. At the time of the trials, when the nation was on the warpath to find any communist sympathizers in the nation most actors, directors, journalists, and other artists
were refusing to speak. They were not going to name any names of people who may have been, or were, communist sympathizers or communists. Elia Kazan was one who did
speak. And, to this day most people in Hollywood still feel he was nothing but a weak coward that deserves no respect, even though his directing was powerful and considered
