more information on using this paper properly! Shakespeares Othello has often been cited as one of the Bards most impressive works, and for many, the archetypal ideal of a
narrative "tragedy". The reason behind Othellos reputation is that the play makes masterful use of all the fundamental aspects of tragedy, presented in a way such that the play is
almost like an instructive course on how to craft a tragedy in and of itself. This paper will analyze the plot, characters, and stylistic diction of Othello in order to
highlight those key ways in which Shakespeare used the tragic form to its greatest effect within the play. This paragraph helps the student present an overview of how Othellos plot
relates to Aristotles elements of tragedy. Aristotle defined the modern sense of tragedy by outlining various elements that a tragedy, by its nature, must incorporate in his classic work of
aesthetic philosophy, the Poetics. The first key element of a tragedy for Aristotle was plot; in particular, he felt that the plot of a tragedy must have the characteristic of
"mimesis", or an inevitable "cause and effect" like progression from beginning to end (McManus, 1999). A tragic plot also adhered to a three part structure consisting of an incentive moment
that begins the chain of mimesis, led by the process of "desis" towards a climax, and then by way of "lusis" towards the resolution or denouement (McManus, 1999). Othello matches
this framework quite closely. The incentive moment occurs with Othellos marriage and the meeting between Roderigo and Iago, two men who have their own reasons for wanting to harm Othello.
