is a very powerful story that illustrates many conditions, many emotions, and many intriguing realities concerning women of her time, as well as women today perhaps. There are many people
who would read this story and think she is rather cold and unfeeling, selfish and not concerned that her husband died. But, in reality she was living in a world
where women did not necessarily marry for love but rather necessity and marriage was often considered something of an institution that was less than comfortable. The following paper examines the
importance of the elements of setting in this story. Elements of Setting in The Story of an Hour by Kate Chopin The most obvious setting is her room,
and the hour within that room. It is a space that is clearly set off from the rest of the house, much like a place in her mind that
no one can enter into, although they try: "Josephine was kneeling before the closed door with her lips to the keyhold, imploring for admission. Louise, open the door! I beg;
open the door--...open the door" (Chopin). In her being in this room it is symbolic as well as literal. She is not heeding the inquiries of others who worry about
her and is keeping her emotions and thoughts to herself, never letting them in. In fact the only one who is allowed in is the reader. She is also keeping
herself in the physical room where she can be silent and absorb the death, or supposed death, of her husband. It is here, in this quite place, that sees the
garden and hears her inner voice telling her of a future of freedom, freedom from the constraints of marriage. There is also the setting that is society. This story
