This is a 6 page paper discussing elements of satire and irony in “Los Vendidos” by Luis Valdez. The play “Los Vendidos” by Luis Valdez uses a great many elements of satire and irony to show the stereotypes of Mexican Americans which have been created and are expected within American society. The play includes a Mexican American, Ms. Jimenez, who has denied her heritage and pretends she is ignorant to the Chicano ways while at the same time is unable to escape her own culture. In addition to the development of satire to expose Ms. Jimenez, Valdez also employs satire and irony to show how the government needs the support of the Mexican Americans but does not return that support and how the Mexican Americans themselves are able to play stereotypes for Americans in an attempt to obtain what they want. Luis Valdez who is a graduate of San Jose University and a drama instructor at the University of California, Santa Cruz has written a great deal about Mexican Americans, or Chicanos, within American societies. He was the founder of the Teatro Campesino in 1966 which has toured throughout the United States and parts of Europe performing the works of Chicano playwrights. Throughout his career he has also be awarded the 1971 Drama Critics Award, the 1970 Los Angeles Drama Critics Circle Award and the 1968 Obie Award in New York for his political plays regarding workers survival (Valdez). "Los Vendidos" outlines the political intimidation regarding the grape growers and farmers toward their Chicano field workers in Delano, California. Not obvious from the script but obvious when the play is seen performed, the play not only contains "stereotypical" elements of the lifestyle and language of the Chicano workers but also contains a great deal of Chicano music, dance, dress to accent the Spanish influence and the Chicano struggle for recognition within American society (Valdez).
