the basic elements of life are contained in the context of this work, inclusive of the themes of the cycle of life, freedom and justice. The basic elements may be
explored by examining the work itself, but these themes are larger than life and appear in ordinary life and day to day existence. These themes are what explain all existence
and they are difficult to refute. A look at these ideas is integral to exploring life, and while Plato to some extent, takes an existentialist view, there is a lot
of down to Earth material in The Republic which relates to politics and government. Still, when reviewing the material closely, some pertinent themes jump out, rendering this a broader work
than many suppose. In essence, while The Republic appears to be very political, and it is, it also addresses more serious matters. Rosen (2005) claims that the book is essentially
about birth and death. Clearly, this theme that goes to the circle of life idea is paramount. Without human beings cycling through life, there would be no civilization. How does
the Republic symbolize this idea? Rosen (2005) writes: "In discussing the relevant passages, we shall have to come to some understanding of the fundamental importance in the Republic of the
metaphor of descent and its connection to the two great themes of birth and death, as these themes bear upon the question of the genesis of the city" (p.127). Here,
the symbolic nature of birth may be applied to the society itself, but the Republic does address larger themes in that birth and death, and the circle of life, explains
