say that they possess these elements through religious movement in the United States but that the society possesses thoughts that are similar to those of other religions. The following paper examines how Confucian, Daoist, Buddhist, and Legalist schools of thought are reflected in elements in the society of the United States. Confucian While there are many elements to the school of thought known as Confucianism, we focus on what is perhaps best called the idealist aspect of Confucian thought. One author notes that, "Confucians remind us that the familiar ideals of friendship, parenthood, and filiality are far from trivial; in real life we only rarely attain these ideals. We all too often just go through the motions, too preoccupied to give our full attention to the relationship" (Berling, 1982). And, "If we consistently and wholeheartedly realized our potential to be the very best friend, parent, son, or daughter humanly possible, we would establish a level of caring, of moral excellence, that would approach the utopian" (Berling, 1982). While Americans are not out to truly find a utopia it seems, they are a people who have some of these tendencies. We note, for example, how when devastation hits, whether that devastation be something like 9/11 or the death of a loved one, we turn inward and find we are more appreciative of the people in our lives. This is not something necessarily taught in the Bible, but rather something that seems to be spiritual and emotional for Americans. And, events like 9/11 pull us together in some ways, looking for a better vision on how to live our lives.
