Social development is a critical component of early childhood education. In order to succeed in the world, children not only have to develop independence
but also have to learn to get along with others. Indeed, concepts such as self esteem and even individualism are all affected by the socialization processes that we undergo
as children. Various attempts have been made over time to revise curriculum and classroom methodology to enhance not just academic progress but also childrens social development.
One of the more recent focuses in early childhood education has been on developmentally appropriate practices (DAP. Proposed by the National Association for the Education
of Young Children, DAP is a child centered approach. Instead of didactic teaching structure that has characterized much of the history of classroom education, DAP emphasizes the importance of
incorporating play into the learning process. As Gillespie and Hunter (2010, 42) emphasize, "children are naturally curious about each other and want to
connect with and support each other". When a child is rejected by his or her peers, however, it can have adverse impacts ranging from behavioral problems to mental health
