practices fall within the confines of state and federal laws. In setting policy, policymakers sometimes appear not to consider the facts of the classroom at all. The issue of inclusion serves as an example of some of the difficulties principals face in their liaison positions. Several studies indicate that a wide range of policies can be implemented, but that inclusion is most successful when policy is based on well-considered changes involving a wide range of considerations. These considerations are not limited to but include points such as: * All students ability to achieve in the inclusion environment; * Parents receptivity to general- and special education students being taught within the same classroom; * Meeting the requirements of law in terms of "least restrictive environment;" and * Teachers responses to all special education students and their abilities to teach content from a variety of perspectives - i.e., the need to address each learning style present in individual classrooms. Two principals share their views on how realistic the aims of research and policy are in light of the form that actual conditions can take.
