Unfortunately, many will fail at the process of change because they fail to undertake it in the appropriate strategic manner. This paper will explore the proper considerations that one must make before implementing wide-reaching strategic change in a modern organization. As a core hypothetical example, the paper will look at the Brooke Army Medical Center in San Antonio, Texas, and in particular, the Army Burn Center, which is housed at this facility. The change to be addressed will be the adoption of electronic medical record technology in a well-established organization. Brooke Army Medical Center is a strong and robust organization with a great deal of history and stability in the region. It employs hundreds of key medical professionals, serves as a learning center for all US Armed Forces field medics, and acts as a font of innovation for new combat medical technologies and techniques. The Center was first established in 1879, and has served US soldiers through all major wars since. The Burn Unit itself has cared for more than 800 soldiers since the beginning of the Iraq War in 2003, and frequently sees soldiers within 36 hours of their first being injured in venues such as Iraq or Afghanistan. With such an important task, and such a venerable history, the Center can hardly be faulted. However, that history means that certain aspects of the organization are outdated and in need of change.
