may even speed from one toll booth to another. The problem with that in this electronic age is that the government can tell how fast one is going. A speeding
ticket can be issued electronically too. Some equate this to a Big Brother mentality. But others call it progress. No matter what one calls it, it is a part of
electronic government. What is electronic government exactly? One definition is as follows: "E-government is the use of information technology to support government operations, engage citizens, and provide government services"
("The Future of E-Government," 2008). EZ Pass is not the only form of e-government that has surfaced. Today, people can renew driver licenses online and do myriad things such as
pay tickets and fines. The use of online services inclusive of free library services may be equated with electronic governance. But there are greater opportunities and challenges along the way
that has caused controversy. The concept of electronic voting has been quite disturbing to some. The idea that people could vote from their homes is unconscionable to the
old fashioned. Of course, a good point is that there is more that can go wrong to comprise democracy if e-voting were a reality. At the same time, computerized machines
are taking the place of the old fashioned voting booth. While there is room for error, certainly working on electronic problems is easier than deciphering chads. Another controversial area is
the creation of an ID card for all citizens. And while there is controversy, people are riding through toll booths enjoying the fact that they no longer have to stop.
