is that with the exception of John F. Kennedy who was Catholic, virtually all the presidents have been white, Anglo-Saxon Protestants. And this phenomenon is not limited to the presidency.
People tend to elect those who are considered typical, mainstream Americans, despite the fact that the face of America has changed significantly over the years. In addition to that qualification,
which is really not a qualifying factor but most candidates tend to be white males, there are others. Another is that the president is supposed to be a family man.
Few presidents have not had first ladies, and although there has been gossip that these upstanding married men had mistresses, although none other than President Clinton has actually been caught
with their pants down. In fact, until the Gary Hart campaign, few candidates were actually put on the spot, shown pictures and flooded with evidence of their hidden romances. President
Clinton was perhaps the only president to be bombarded with sexual harassment charges and to have had sexual escapades in the Oval Office. Today, when candidates surface, having an intact
family is an asset. In the United Stats, when somebody wants to run, there is a process they must follow. First, they must gain enough signatures to get on
the ballot and they must also raise money for their campaigns. Basically, when a candidate wants to run, they must drum up support. In the United States, there is a
