Essay / Research Paper Abstract

A 17 page paper discussing the media's treatment of the campaign and its two leading candidates, Al Gore and George W. Bush. The purpose of the paper is to determine whether the media shifts its support to the "underdog" as determined by the polls, by examining both the basis of journalism and examples of articles published at varying times throughout the campaign. The paper concludes that journalists do not present the "full, fair and accurate" picture of facts as they exist, but of facts taken in the context of the philosophies of John Rawls, who maintains that fairness lies in basing need on the most disadvantaged of the society. The paper demonstrates bias in the published accounts, but bias based on philosophy rather than through overt intent. Bibliography lists 17 sources.
