hidden problem, which is difficult to measure (Roe 14). Ainsworht notes that most cases involve some kind of physical abuse and next in prevalence is financial abuse (Roe 14). Emotional
abuse is also common (Roe 14). Elder abuse is something that can go on for some time undetected. This is true even though a number of people may be around
to witness the abuse. Some professionals seem to be in denial or they collude with families so that an investigation is not started (Roe 14). The professionals often are hesitant
to refer cases because the laws are such that it is difficult to protect the elderly (Roe 14). That is, if the caregiver is prosecuted, who will care for the
victim? Things could get worse, and often, there is a fine line between an overstressed daughter and a true abuser. Hence, detection is sometimes illusive. Generally, the characterization of elder
abuse is that it does occur in the United States and while hard to define, certain situations lend themselves to be categorized as such. The term has been used for
quite some time in the literature and is a category of behaviors including material abuse, psychological abuse, physical abuse, passive neglect and active neglect (Roe 14). II.
