were more tolerant of abusive situations than were Caucasian or African American women (Moon, 2000). Another study focusing on a variety of ethnic groups suggested that psychological abuse
such as ignoring or isolating a family member is as hurtful as physical abuse (2000). Elder abuse, to an extent, is pertinent to culture. Western cultures are more tolerant
because they do not have the respect for the elderly as it exists in other countries. Whatever its causes, and wherever it is more prevalent, the fact that it exists
in society and is found in nursing homes is inexcusable. There are a variety of problems that occur throughout the world in nursing homes. The incidents differ such
as a burning of a so-called witch in Mozambique, to the punching of a nursing home resident in America (Nelson, 2002). One report points to the problem as
something that is likely to grow in line with the aging of the worlds population (2002). There are presently 542 million people over the age of 60 years in
1995, and that number will probably increase to about 1.2 billion (2002, p.1094) in 2025. Information regarding the extent of elder abuse, which includes physical, sexual, and psychological abuse, is
scant (Nelson, 2002). Alex Kalache, coordinator of WHOs Ageing and Life Course Unit, explains that today, the society is where it was twenty years previously on child abuse and
