The National Center on Elder Abuse reported that within a ten-year period from 1986 to 1996, there was a more than 150 percent increase in the total number of reported
elder abuse cases, jumping from 117,000 to 293,000 (Tauriac and Scruggs, 2006, p. 37). The exact number of cases involving abusive mistreatment of elders is unknown since only about
one out of every 13 or 14 such cases is ever formally reported (Collins, 2006, p. 1290). Elder abuse has affected the African American community in particular since they
only represent 8.3 percent of the American senior citizen population and yet accounted for the 18.7 of the reported elder abuse cases (Tauriac and Scruggs, 2006, p. 37). In
such instances, the elderly victim typically has a close personal and dependent relationship with the abusive individual, and among African Americans this is nearly always a family member (Collins, 2006).
I. Different Types of African American Elder Abuse Abuse of African American senior citizens typically falls under four categories - physical abuse, verbal abuse, neglect or abandonment, and psychological abuse
(Tauriac and Scruggs, 2006). Physical abuse is the most common, and accounts to nearly 14 percent of all trauma involving senior citizens (Collins, 2006). This can take the
form of slapping, pinching, biting, some type of blunt force trauma, scalding or burning, over- or under-medication, force feeding, and physical restraints (Collins, 2006). Extreme reports of physical elderly
