Most people are aware that there are laws that exist to protect children and animals from abuse. Many are not aware that there are laws that protect adults such as the elderly and disabled. Few people are aware of the magnitude of the problem or the consequences. Elder abuse affects all the systems that the individual is a part of, from the individual level to family, friends, social institutions, care providers, government agencies and American societal norms. The America belief system includes a responsibility to protect those who are not able to care for themselves. This 8 page paper examines the issues of elder abuse and the means that are in place to protect vulnerable adults. Bibliography lists 8 sources.

enacted and agencies are set in place to provide protection for those vulnerable to abuse, neglect and exploitation. Every state has elder abuse laws to protect the vulnerable from abuse,
neglect, and financial exploitation. In order to respect an individuals right to self determination and autonomy the laws are applicable only to those unable to protect themselves, for instance;
people with a physical or mental condition - such as Alzheimers disease or an infirmity related to aging - that substantially impairs the ability to care for themselves. The
reporting of abuse is mandatory and failure to report is considered a misdemeanor in most states. This aspect of the law applies to persons within the community as well
as to health professionals and paid caregivers. Abuse generally includes both physical and psychological maltreatment. Physical abuse includes allowing as well as inflicting bodily injury or pain
to the individual. Slapping, kicking, biting, pinching, and burning, inappropriate use of drugs, and, or, physical restraints; as well as sexual abuse are considered physical abuse. Psychological abuse
is defined as verbal harassment, intimidation, denigration, and isolation, and includes repeated threats of abandonment or of physical harm. Neglect is the failure of a caretaker to provide the
