director J. Edgar Hoover referred to as the greatest internal threat facing American national security. Browns frank discourse reveals the sexism that was inherent in the black power politics
of this organization. It also reveals the personal growth that Brown experienced as she moved from a position that readily accepted sexual domination to one in which she felt empowered
to define herself in something other then sexual terms. Brown came to power in the Black Panther Party (BPP) when its acknowledged leader, and Browns lover, Huey Newton, jumped
bail on murder charges and sought political asylum in Cuba. Newton informed Brown that he wanted her to take charge of the organization in his absence. Brown indicates that she
is fully aware that Newton didnt do this out of respect for her abilities; he did it because he trusted that her loyalty was completely to him. Inside observers at
the time related that Huey would chuckle that "she (Brown) might be a son of a bitch, but she was his son of a bitch." During her three year
tenure as the leader of the BBP, Brown succeed in welding the party into a powerful local and state political force, which, in part, influenced the 1974 election victory of
Jerry Brown for governor of California. However, in the process, Brown had to overcome virulent sexism. In coping with this, Brown began to have a different perspective on her position
in American society. She writes: The feminists were right. The value of my life had been obliterated as much by being female as by being black and poor. Racism and
sexism in America were equal partners in my oppression. Even men who were themselves oppressed wanted power over women. What social sigma had been intended by the label lesbian, always
