It is also more, however. The publication appears to be one that means to serve the local community, but also a wider geographical range. It reports news from around the world as should any good newspaper, but it also carries stories that have a more collectively personal significance. serve the local community, but also a wider geographical range. It reports news from around the world as should any good newspaper, but it also carries stories that have
a more collectively personal significance. Concept El Universal reminds the reader of Singapores Herald, in
that it is first a local newspaper but also is of interest to many people within the broader geographical area. Beyond being "only" a newspaper, the online version also
seeks to be an integral part of readers lives. It offers the ubiquitous online auctions, along with Spanish-language chat rooms, a newspaper-centered email option and a section called "virtual
friends," essentially a message board section that equates to a discussion group that is not presented in real time. Based in Caracas, Venezuela,
El Universal appears to be a publication that would appeal to a broad range of people. The news is timely and appears to be reported well: if there
is bias in any of the news items, it is not evident. The serious nature of the news is tempered by stories of local interest, preventing "hard news" from
reading like a collection of gloomy accounts. The February 20, 2002 edition reports on regional and world news, but includes a story of
